PE Funding
Please read the information below which gives details of our PE and Sport Premium Grant and how we allocate the funding.
Sport Premium Grant - what is the funding for?
We welcome the government's announcement to provide additional funding to improve the provision of PE and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools. We are firmly committed to utilising this resource effectively in order to develop high quality PE lessons and offer greater opportunities to partake in sporting competitions for all our pupils.
What does the Sport Premium mean for Thames Ditton Junior School?
The school has developed an action plan in order to continue to improve PE provision and raise sporting achievement for all our pupils. We have targeted our funding with a view to expand our current provision and improved the teaching of our PE and sport, ensuring that high quality, enjoyable PE and sport remain an invaluable part of school life. The Sport Premium will enable us to build sustainable sporting links with our local community to encourage pupils to increase their participation in sport beyond the school gates.
By providing a balanced and varied extra-curricular sporting programme, we want to encourage children to partake in sports that they enjoy in order to sustain lifelong participation.
Enable all children to compete in sport through more inter-house and district competitions
The school already takes part in a number of local borough competitions. We will continue to arrange tournaments and fixtures with the other primary schools within our cluster and Local Authority. Several tournaments take place within school hours and previously we have not been in a position to attend. The funding will alleviate this problem by providing cover for staff who take teams to such events. In addition, we feel it is extremely important that all our children should have the chance to compete in sporting competitions, which encourage a competitive spirit and promote co-operation and fair play. The money will therefore facilitate more inter-house competitions throughout the school year.
Develop staff expertise and confidence in teaching high quality PE lessons by providing additional training and professional development opportunities.
One of the key principles of the Sport Premium is to develop teachers’ skills to enhance the delivery of PE lessons. One area of potential improvement identified by our staff is the teaching of gymnastics. Consequently, the school has begun funding a British Gymnastics Association coach to support our teachers.
Purchase quality-assured professional development modules for PE to ensure lessons remain exciting and engaging
Buying quality-assured teaching aids will mean that teachers at our school are supported in their planning, assessment and delivery of high quality PE lessons.
Renewal of sports equipment to aid any of the above aims
The extra funding will enable the school to buy more equipment to be used in PE lessons and future competitions to encourage full and active participation of all children.
"The sports funding has had good impact on both sports provision and improving pupils’ physical development; it also enabled teachers to have specialist training in various sports and gymnastics. As a result pupils’ performance in competitive activities is excellent and a wide range of well-attended sports activities is provided, including for example, golf twice per week." Ofsted 2014
