At Thames Ditton Junior school we believe that History is capable of captivating a child’s imagination and gives them a greater understanding of how the past can influence the present. It is not just the study of facts and dates, but offers children the chance to become a detective and explore the past in an exciting way.
History is taught mainly through a topic based approach providing children with a chance to explore a variety of sources from which the past may come alive. The programme of study we offer aims to provide children with opportunities to compare and contrast events, examine how and why things have changed, to learn about important people in History and to develop their research skills.
We would like to arouse interest in the past and encourage questioning and enable our children to be open minded and enquiring thinkers capable of understanding cause and effect. They should understand how people have lived in the past and begin to make links between the past and modern times. We encourage first hand experience wherever possible; visits to historical sites and museums both local and in London, visits from theatre groups, interactive workshops and visiting experts all contribute to achieving this.
