Spring 2017

18th March 2017 Cross-Country

Last Saturday TDJS took a team of runners from Years 4 to 6 to take part in the Esher District Cross Country championships. 13 schools from across the borough entered teams and there were up to 85 runners in each race.

We spent several weeks preparing for the event, including a couple of training runs on Giggs Hill Green. All of the children who competed on the morning were absolutely outstanding, contributing points for an overall team total. What was extremely apparent to all who watched, was the grit and determination shown by our runners; they individually pushed themselves to the limit in every race! We were overwhelmed by emotion and pride on the day. Not only were the children great sporting ambassadors, they are to be commended for their personal conduct which was exemplary. It was an honour for Miss Riley, Mrs Charlton and me to be there supporting and celebrating with this talented group of children.

As a result of each child’s efforts, TDJS were crowned District champions for the second year running. We were delighted with this result (after a very tense wait!) and very proud of the fact that this really was a team victory.

A special mention goes to Poppy Mitchell, who not only ran as part of the team but won the Year 6 girls’ race beating every other competitor her age.   Now we start training for the District track and field events which will take place next term!

Anti Bullying Poster competition
Congratulations to the two winners of our anti-bullying poster competition.  Seb Akritidis in 4W and Darcy Hall-Barr in 5H.  They have won a voucher and will also have their posters converted into pictures, which will be hung up in our school.  The standard was extremely high and we were very impressed with all the entries.

Cake Sales
Well done to Ceri Jones, Amelie Collyer, Olivia Omo and Marium Miah who raised £139.48 for the Blue Cross.  The cakes were gone in a flash!

Chess Club
The following children have qualified for the regional stage of the Delancey UK Chess challenge - the MEGAFINAL!

Reeds Annual Tournament
40 TDJS children took part in the annual Reeds tournament playing hockey, netball and rugby.  We were delighted to win both the boys and girls hockey finals and these teams will now play in the forthcoming Kingston cup.  Our netballers also won and will go on to represent the school in the Surrey regional finals in May.  A second netball team finished 4th out of 12 teams.  Our rugby team finished a very commemndable 3rd.  Well done to all that took part.

Reigate Cross Country Run
Congratulations to all of the athletes who entered the Reigate competition.  A few of our runners impressively came within the top 20 with outstanding runs.  The morning sounded very gruelling but, as always, our pupils showed determinate and perseverance to complete the tough course.  Congratulations to all who took part.  Many of these athletes will be competing again in the annual District Cross Country Competition.

Actual walking towards a Virtual finish line

Five of the teachers at TDJS have been taking part in a 6 week virtual-walking competition, competing against 96 other schools throughout Surrey.   Their challenge was to collectively achieve a combined total of 1,628,000 steps to take them from Lands End to John O'Groats. Ms Welsh, Mr Black, Mrs Krishnan, Mrs Richards & Mrs Charlton (collectively known as Coast Busters) managed to surpass this target managing 1, 684, 982 steps by the end of the challenge. Their experience was a really positive one, in which they bonded together by keeping regular tabs on weekly progress using individual pedometers to record steps and managed to get fitter / have fun during the process.

They are pictured alongside Mr Fry (Team Leader & statistician) at the beginning of their epic adventure.

The office team also competed in the virtual-walking competition and met up on several occasions to go on walks around Richmond Park and Reigate Hill. Mrs O’Sullivan, Mrs Howarth, Mrs Reed, Mrs Gardiner and Mrs Dawson all took the competition very seriously - choosing to walk to places, where previously they would have driven. Messages that needed to be taken around the school were jumped upon as a way of increasing the daily steps. Total steps achieved for the Red Hot Chilli Steppers = 2, 291, 072.. Mrs Dawson averaged 100,000 steps a week!! Mrs Gardiner somehow walked 41,399 on one day! Well done School Office - what a team!

Gymnastics
Congratulations to Isla who competed in the Quattro Jewel of the South competition in Ipswich last week. She came 8th overall and placed 1st on Beam and 2nd on Range and Conditioning.

She has been training to be a gymnast since she was 2 and a half years old and trains for 21 hours a week at Tolworth Gym Club! She recently trained with the GB gymnasts in Hemel Hempstead and is a member of the SE Regional Squad. She competes regularly on the floor, beam, bars and vault and is looking forward to the Regional Championships in April.

This was her biggest competition to date and she showed great resilience after making a costly mistake on bars, to complete a great beam routine and gain the highest score of the day on this piece.

Trampoline
Congratulations to Anya who is a member of Kingston Trampoline Academy.  On 25th February she competed in a club competition and came second in her level.

Netball
TDJS netballers have been on a winning streak.  we recently had three teams playing against Claygate Primary and managed to win all three matches!  This was particularly pleasing as we had lost against them last term.  It just goes to show how much we have all improved!  We then went on to play a league match against Hurst Park, which we won 23 - 0 leaving TDJS at the top of their group.  Roll on the semi-finals!

Esher Schools Tag Rugby Tournament - February 2017
Our rugby team recently took part in the Esher Schools tag Rugby Tournament.  The Year 6 team played extremely well and, as requested - they cam back with the trophy!  Well done to Ella, Amelie, Will, George, Nicholas, Will, Calam, Poppy,  Aiden, Joshua, Cameron and Maddie.

The boys' football team also played in a match against St Andrews.  It was a very close and exciting match, resulting in a 1 - 1 draw.  Well done boys.

National Primary Schools Chess Championships - 1st Round

We were represented by an U9 team of Dylan Rasenberg, Jesse Gould, Ben Bulckley, Thomas Drummond , Matthew Morrison, Sam Trotman and an U11 team of Edward Morrison, Louie McKillop, Teddy Belton, Finn Gould, Theo Rasenberg and James Hainault

The teams both played well with every game counting towards the final tally.   The U9 team were placed =10th going into the last round and they needed a good last round to finish in the top 9 and qualify for the next round. Difficult but not impossible and it was very close but it was not meant to be. Still a very brave effort from a group of players who haven't played many tournaments before.

The U11 team had a different story. They have some tournament experience and they were placed well throughout the tournament and 6th going into the last round. 7 teams were to qualify so a positive last round victory 4-1 was most welcome and a final finishing position of 4th which was upgraded to =3rd after everyone went home because a mistake was spotted in the last round scores. We would have won bronze medals but for an unlucky tiebreak but nevertheless, a very good result, especially when you realise that 5 out of our 6 players were from year 5 and they could have been playing against older children from the other schools. The prize is a place in the semi-finals.

Well done to all the players and thanks also for all the parental support.  Graeme Buckley

Surrey Sports Hall Indoor Athletics Competition
We took a team of 24 talented athletes to compete at Leatherhead Leisure Centre in the annual indoor athletics competition. Athletes competed in a series of field events including javelin throw, standing long jump and speed bounce and many more as well as several gruelling track races.

We are delighted to announce that our team of extremely focused and determined Year 5 and 6 pupils won the event! They showed superb sportsmanship and outstanding tenacity throughout the entire afternoon and were cheered on every step of the way by very proud parents and teachers. We will now be competing in the next round to find a winning Surrey school.
Well done TDJS!

Congratulations to our netball teams who beat St Lawrence in all three matches - 18-0  9-2  10-0

Dodgeball

Well done to our Year 6 dodgeball team consisted of Toby W, Matthew T, Maddie W, Dhunia R, Ella C, Oscar C, Josh T, Sam A George A and Sam H who recently took part in a competition against other local schools.  The team played 10 matches and impressively won 7 of them!  After a very nail-biting second half of the tournament, our team were named runners-up coming second to Long Ditton (St Mary's).

Cake Sales

Mr Black's cake sale for Aspire UK.  The combined sale of Krispy Kreme donuts to staff at break time and the fundraising from the after school cake sale raised £251.90 in total.  Mr Black is very touched by the the fantastic team effort from all the pupils, parents and staff, who both baked and bought biscuits and cakes.  Mr Black is fundraising as part of Team Osprey to support his Cross Channel Swim this Summer.  Online donations and further information can be found at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/PPR-BlackTeamOsprey
